Steve Pike’s Repro Hardtop

When we were in Victoria in March 2008 we stayed with long time friends Steve and Helen Pike in Bacchus Marsh. Steve has a Healey shop which specializes in Healeys with a particular emphasis on 100Ss!!!

He has restored many Healeys and the quality of the work he produces is second to none.

While we were there Steve showed me a prototype of the reproduction factory hardtop which he is now producing. I felt that it looked very good and Steve says that the production versions will look even better as they have done some more finishing on the mould since this prototype was produced.

Steve can be contacted at mclassic@bacchusmarsh.net.au

Here are some detail pictures. I will look for some more and add them when I find them.

Who is this guy? Born in New Zealand some time back. Went to Maori Hill Primary School then Kaikorai Valley High before joining the RNZAF and an Airman Cadet in 1968. Graduated 1972 with an NZCE in Aeronautical Engineering. Then embarked on the typical Kiwis "Big Trip Overseas". Got to see quite a few places, and spent a while in the U.K. "home" as it was refered to by many New Zealanders in those days, before travelling on to New York and then to Canada by bus!! This trip is presently on hold (has been for the last 34 years). Met my dear wife Judy not long after arriving in Ontario and we have been happily married since 1976. After travelling around New Zealand and the pacific in 1979 I started Precision Sportscar andfor the next 23 years grew the business and helped raise 2 boys Drew and Robin.

  1. Michael,
several years ago we supplied a 2-seat hard top to Steve Pike these tops were designed and produced by my Healey shop along with 100/4, 4-seat and BJ8 roofs, he then took great pride in ripping off my roof and selling it as his own product, much to my dismay!
if this is a 100/4 roof then i can only guess that it is one of mine or he has re-shaped one into a 100/4 style. please check out my web site, we have been supplying these roofs around the world and to Healey shops for years.

  2. I have a two-seater top that I bought from Nick Freeman of NICAL Engineering about five years back. Nick claims to have made the top mold up by shortening a BN6-7 top about 4″ and then going from there. It is a very nice item and I will send you a photo separately–in fact if you go to the Britsh Car Forum and find any of my posts you will see a picture of it mounted on the 100 as I am now using it as my main BCF profile image.

I had occasion to speak to Pete Farmer a few years back and he told me that Nick stole the top design from HIM, that he–Pete–is the one that made it, etc. So perhaps Pete is truly the source for what I consider to be a nice item. If so I thank him for it and am sorry he was not able to better protect his project.

    1. If you’re still keen I have one in good restorable shape-black

  3. I will immediately grab your rss as I can not find your email subscription link or newsletter service. Do you have any? Kindly let me understand so that I may just subscribe. Thanks.

  4. I did indeed buy a hardtop from my friend Pete Farmer. Petes hardtops are ultra thin for light weight. Unfortunately we have summised that our hot Aussie sun caused distortion to the hardtop , a kind of rippling affect along the sides. The option of replacing another top from the UK was costly for Pete to say the least. So to help my mate Pete ,I had a mould taken and made a thicker hardtop top which cured the rippling issue. The top proved quite popular as a replacement to the original factory item.
I am currently making new hardtops for the 100/4 to the specification used in the 1950,s . Then they were made by universal laminations. I do no believe Pete Farmer offers this type of hardtop so please contact Steve for the original style hardtop for your 100/4
