Michael -

I came up with this:

Stow it with the top of the jack base touching the bottom of the bracket with the two prongs on it, and crank it up until it contacts the bracket closest to the back seat.
It's the only way that I could get the cover retainer to screw down.
I have a Word document with a sketch that I drew that I can email to you if you want.

Alan, I think you may be on to something. I do recall trying to install the jack as you describe but completely discounted the notion for fear that the bracket rubbing on the thread would be a really bad idea considering the load that it is subjected to in use.
As you say if you look closely at the diagram that does seem to be the idea. I'll give it a try when the frigid temperatures abate a little.
Regarding your comment about translating the instructions into French..I couldn't agree more..however I'm glad the instructions for my Subaru aren't in Japanese.
Cheers,

Michael -

On further thought it looks to me that the jack is supposed to be opened large enough that the jack's worm gear is supposed to go inbetween the carriage bolt and the metal tab coming up from the bottom of the trunk. If you look at the picture in the middle of your instructions, that's how it is shown there.

Am I a complete nerd for trying to figure this out?

Cheers,

Maybe it's because us lazy americans were too sidetracked with translating the instructions into french!

It looks to me you are supposed to rotate the jack handle to rest on it's side, then that should give you enough room to open up the jack a bit from it's bottom position and then you can rest the jack's top on top of the handle, and the carraige bolt can then go through the bottom portion of the jack rather than the top portion in your picture.

How does that work?
