Tons of Used Parts …Chapter II

Now that the seasons have started their “miraculous mutations” or “swapping around” as we humble non poets would put it the temperature in Ontario has risen, albeit briefly, above freezing. This brief respite has presented me with the opportunity to start a task that I have not been looking forward to. As promised, some weeks back, I will be putting together an inventory of the “Tons of Used Parts” that I would like to get rid of. However, before I start this epistle there are some things which all interested parties should be aware:
First I should explain where all this stuff came from. Back in 1979 I started a business called “Precision Sportscar Servicing”. Precision as it became known was an early starter in the business of Healey restorations. When I started the only other company that I knew of was one called “Global Healey” and they vanished shortly after we started. In the days that Precision started the only sources for Healey parts were in the U.K. Moss hadn’t even thought of Healeys and some U.S. companies like MG Mitten and Victoria British were just dabbling. 1979 was a time when you could buy a rusted out Healey for less than $500 and really good ones were about $3000 so the demand for repro parts was fairly low as “good used” was the order of the day.

As the years went by we expanded to include MGs and Triumphs, although big Healeys were by far our largest volume. With very few exceptions all the parts we saved were for Austin Healey, Triumph or MG sports cars.Because parts were so hard to get, even though you could still get some from the dealer, I started buying up badly rusted Healeys and disassembling them for parts. When one does this the hardest part of the business is deciding what to keep and what to dump.

I started with 3 rules:

1. If a good quality reproduction of the part was available for less than it would cost to transform the part in question into a saleable item the used part went out.
2. If no reproduction of the part was available the part would be kept if it could be restored to saleable condition for less than what it would sell for.
3. If we had as many as we thought we would ever need only the best were kept.

Of course, as the years went by, the standards changed. When I started a “saleable part” was essentially one which could be installed with a reasonable chance that it would work and cosmetics were not a large factor also there was by no means the plethora of quality reproduction parts available in the early ‘80s that there is now.

Secondly these parts have been stored in three 40’ transport trailers for at least 15 years so they are not what one would describe as being “immaculately clean”, in fact exactly the opposite is true. Of late the raccoons have managed to gain access to the trailers and have eaten some of the cardboard boxes and left their calling cards in places so, don’t expect to arrive with a truck and just transfer a few boxes from one place to another. To be realistic transferring all the parts from where they are into another truck will probably take 2 people at least a full day and probably more, and they (the people) will get dirty to boot.
The parts that I have listed are just those that I could see reasonably easily and were of sufficient significance to list, there are more behind on the shelves. I have not included many other parts which are there like bell housings, gearbox cases, etc and, when we say a bin, this is usually a 20” x 24” x 10” deep fiberglass bin or in some cases a milk crate or similar.
That said, here is the list of the parts that are in the three trailers in absolutely no particular order.
Where possible the parts listed are linked to photos of the described items, I have not photographed everything because many are hard to get a good view of.

About Michael

Who is this guy? Born in New Zealand some time back. Went to Maori Hill Primary School then Kaikorai Valley High before joining the RNZAF and an Airman Cadet in 1968. Graduated 1972 with an NZCE in Aeronautical Engineering. Then embarked on the typical Kiwis "Big Trip Overseas". Got to see quite a few places, and spent a while in the U.K. "home" as it was refered to by many New Zealanders in those days, before travelling on to New York and then to Canada by bus!! This trip is presently on hold (has been for the last 34 years). Met my dear wife Judy not long after arriving in Ontario and we have been happily married since 1976. After travelling around New Zealand and the pacific in 1979 I started Precision Sportscar andfor the next 23 years grew the business and helped raise 2 boys Drew and Robin.

  1. Mitch Simmons says:

    Hello Michael,
I was one of the first to contact you a while back,do you have a price in mind for all 3 trailers? lmk Mitch

  2. Michael says:

    Hi Mitch,
Many thanks for your note. Indeed you were among the first to contact me regarding the parts I have for sale. There has been considerable interest both through blog postings and directly via e mail.
Obviously I want to realize as much as I can from this collection but, until such time as I am able to fully describe what is there, prospective purchasers will not be sufficiently informed to make realistic offers.
What I’m going to do is continue with the inventory, including as many photographs as possible, then ask for written offers to be submitted before a particular date.
Barring any unforeseen problems I anticipate that I will have the inventory process completed by the end of this week.
Again thanks for your interest I trust that you will agree that the process that I’m proposing will be fairest to all.

  3. Gary Briggs says:

    Hi Michael-

I am interested in 3 sets of Kangol 3 point static seat belts. Do you have those, and if so, will you sell them separately, or are you only interested in selling the entire inventory as a lot?
    Thanks,
    Gary Briggs

  5. James says:

    Michael:
Since you have made it plain that you do not want to part out individual parts, will you make available, with the consent of the final purchaser of course, that individuals contact information? He/She will have some instant sales by the looks of it.

    James

  6. Michael says:

Hi James, absolutely, BUT I will not be selling any of the parts to individuals until a decision is made regarding the future of this inventory.

Fabulous project and we seem to be short of the following detail parts – hard to find of course –

    No1 is a 100/6 horn button wIth the “flash and a 6”.
No 2 is a glass washer bottle – Type Trafalgar by John Sydney Ltd.

A good set of side screens would be amazing, as I do not want to get into the reproduction market.

And I thought after a lifetime in commercial aircraft that some aircraft parts were hard to source………

  84. Andrew Robson says:

Hello Michael, I have done the same thing with a lot of gt6 parts and misc other British stuff over a 22 year period of servicing them, albeit not quite as large as your stash but still very sizeable, two years ago I tried to find a home for all of it including the 11 complete cars for what had to be a bargain price, all I got were stupid offers from people, I hope that you had a better experience.
I noticed that you were willing to sell parts off individually in the last posts, is that still the case and do you have a 100-4 BN2 bellhousing, front engine plate, and a front left wing.
    Thanks for your time,
    Andrew
P.S. I am so glad I did not let them go at the time, I am now about to start going through the stuff properly and will start to sell it off to people who need it

If I could get your email adress I would like to send you some pictures from the frame and list the other parts which I am searching for. Do you ship to Holland and could you send me the price of this left side screen please ?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

  88. Stan says:

I’m looking for gears for a bn1 3 speed transmission I need the lay gear and 1st gear

    • Michael says:

      Hi Stan,
I have a limited supply of BN1 parts but you will need to be more specific about your gearbox as there were 2 different laygears for that box.
      The earlier gear was part#1B3481
and the later one (after gearbox #5145) was 1B3693
However very often later gears were installed in early boxes so it is essential that you check which laygear is in your box before ordering parts.
